Waterwheel

2012

Commissioned by ~Flow and the Royal Academy of Engineering, this poem and audio piece respond to the engineering behind ~Flow, a floating tidemill which was installed on the banks of the River Tyne by Ed Carter and The Owl Project as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The mill housed electro-acoustic musical machinery and instruments that responded to the constantly changing environment of the river, generating sound and data.

The piece responds to the engineering by reflecting the motion of the mill’s waterwheel and its physical structure within the formal structure of the poem. Visit the commission page on the ~flow website to read the text.
